Professor Matsuzawa is a professor at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University. He is also the president of the International Primatological Society. He entered Kyoto University as a philosophy major in 1969 and as a student his curiosity in the perception of the world led him to study experimental psychology. During that time he also enjoyed mountain climbing and belonged to Kyoto University Alpine Club. After graduate school, Professor Matsuzawa became an assistant at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University and in 1978 started the “Ai-Project”, a project in which he taught language-like skills to chimpanzees. He continues to be active in primatology research, a field in which he is known to be a pioneer. He recently started the “Green Corridor Project”, which aims to protect wild chimpanzees and their habitat in Africa.
